FAQs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How do I get into the games industry?

A: We are asked this question a lot at Krome, and generally it depends on the position you are interested in securing. The simplest answer to this is to send in an application with examples of your work. Should you not be successful in obtaining an interview or a position, you should continue working on your portfolio/demo until you are satisfied with your improvement to apply again. Gaining a position in the games industry requires patience and persistence. You might also consider a position in Quality Assurance (testing), this is a great way to learn more about the various positions available and the game development process. To apply for a Quality Assurance position or register your interest see the Career Opportunities page.

Q: Can I do work experience or an internship at Krome?

A: Unfortunately, Krome is unable to offer students the opportunity to participate in work experience or internship programs. We do regularly review this decision and should our circumstances change, a notice will be placed on the website.

Q: I don’t have any experience. Can I still apply for a job?

A: Of course! At Krome we pride ourselves on supporting local talent. Krome has vacancies for approximately 20 Junior positions each year. See the How to Apply page for more information.

Q: Do I need a degree?

A: We hire juniors based on the quality of the work they provide and their attitude during an interview. Tertiary education is viewed as important to provide the skill and knowledge foundation for the students to develop further. Most courses now require students to work together in project teams to create content, follow schedules and meet deadlines, these skills are easily transferred into the workplace.

There are so many courses available to these prospective game developers. We get asked a lot which course we recommend, it would be unfair to name some over others as each have their own specialisations and benefits. The Game Development Association of Australia (GDAA) is a great resource and provides an overview of courses with a games focus in their “100% Creative Juice” E3 publication (available from www.gdaa.com.au).

Q: What does Krome look for in a graduate/Junior?

A: At Krome Studios, we get a large number of applications for junior positions. What sets exceptional candidates apart is a well thought out and presented application that highlights the individuals skill set. All applications require examples of work either via a demo reel for artists or a working demo or sample code for programmers. We have found that the successful applicants are those who have targeted their application and demo towards the games industry. This can be achieved through providing examples that could be used in games. For example, a general artist application should typically contain low and high poly models, wire frames, poly counts, texture maps and an indication of the time the model took. Overall, we look for graduates with relevant skills and talent but equally important is enthusiasm, great attitude, ability to work in a team environment and of course a love of games!

Q: What should prospective students look for in a Games course?

A: I think the Game Developers Association of Australia (http://www.gdaa.com.au/) covers this really well by using a checklist for students when considering a course. The checklist covers things like; the course having links with the industry, lecturers and tutors that have industry experience and course content that is relevant to the area the prospective developer wishes to specialise. We also suggest students should look into a course that provides for an alternative career path, should a games development opportunity not arise.

Q: If I am unsuccessful, can I request some feedback to improve my skills in the future?

A: Whilst we would really like to give each person feedback on their applications, time limitations just do not allow for it. All we can suggest is to keep working on your skills, and when you have new examples to show – send in another application.

Q: If I am a freelancer or an outsource company, how can I provide examples of my work?

A: At Krome Studios we are often approached by individual freelancers and companies wanting to inform us of the work they do and how they can assist us to make games. If you wish to provide us with your contact details and information on the services you provide in the areas of concept art, modelling, texturing, animation, environments and level design, please address your submission attention to:
